24th World Pilot Gig Championships 2013
The 24th World Pilot Gig Championships will take place on the Isles of Scilly from Friday, 3 May until Monday, 6 May 2013. It is my pleasure on behalf of the organising committee to invite you to take part in these unique Championships. There will be few if any changes to the racing format, but there are several matters that I need to draw your attention to. Following complaints no gigs are to moor adjacent to the Quay, approach the Quay, land or embark crew from the Quay. For the Final races those gigs that wish to raft in order to witness the end of the races must do so in the area that will be delineated by harbour staff, other gigs must head straight back to the beach. Great care must be taken at all times to not obstruct the finish line. It is most important that all coxes and crews comply with the directions of Harbour Officials.
An early return of the trophies awarded last year, and hopefully in good condition and cleaned, would be much appreciated. Late return of trophies last year caused some problems in order to clean them and repair them.
Last year due to high spring tides and the consequent covering of town beach by sea it was necessary to utilise Porth Mellon beach for the storage of gigs. This year the tides will present no problems with utilising town beach so permission has not been sought from the Wildlife Trust for the use of Porth Mellon.
Please complete the registration forms and forward them to Kevin Sherris by 28 February 2013, and notify any subsequent amendments by 10 April 2013. This is particularly important for the ladies and men's super vets races. There was confusion last year with teams entering at the Coxes meeting on Friday evening. As this is a ”race within a race” the computer program has to be adjusted to accommodate these two races so to avoid exclusion and disappointment ensure you complete the Registration Form with due diligence. Entries will not be accepted at the Coxes meeting.
A professional cameraman has been hired to video the finish of races this year due to our volunteer leaving the Islands, new scoreboards have been ordered, together with new sets of trolleys. We have had to utilise some of our reserve funds to pay for these. Regulars among you will be aware that the whole event is funded by the proceeds from Maggie's food in the tunnel. This is good value, tasty, and highly nutritious. Please support the food sales to ensure this event continues next year.
Most importantly, please continue the excellent camaraderie that pertains throughout the whole weekend. Enjoy yourselves, strive to improve your positions on last year, and if you have any problems, or wish to discuss any aspect of the event I shall be in my usual place on the committee bench outside the tunnel and most willing to chat with you.
Rick Persich, Chairman World Pilot Gigs Championships Committee.
